April is budget time in TC. The city spends about $14.4 million of general fund tax dollars per fiscal year. A discussion of how things look this year is on the home page: www.planfortc.com.
Discussions of whether and how we should change things over the long term are coming. How do you want your money spent? Or, what should the city spend more $ on, and what should we spend less $ on? Or, what should the city do more of, and what less of?

Spend the money on infrastructure!!! Enough of the trifling away of funding to the public service union members and their disgraceful retirement systems.

Bill is way off base. You want to see your insurance premiums rise do to the city “cosntracting” for fire service? Get real.. Yes can soem adjustment be made in how retirement and pensions are vested sure. But when you call 911 and need professionals in 4 minutes of less in a town of 18.000 to 20,000 people, the the TCFD and TCPD are your mommy and daddy right now!

I noticed that alot of money is going to the roads and fixing them which is a good thing because its bringing jobs to northern michigan and thats what we need. But i also think we should think about transportation for students and maybe making it better for them. not all high school students can drive or even afford to drive i know that busing is available right now but what about next fall i just read in the newspaper the other day that their thinking about canceling busing for high school students which means they need to find their own transportation couldnt that higher the drop out rate because they have no way to get to school so they stop caring. also i see some about the safety yes safety is very important and im glad to see that we are putting money towards that but what about charities helping people so we dont have poverty. maybe build another homeless shelter to help people out.

Maybe I’m wrong but after looking at parts of the budget and spending that the city does it seems to me that we are paying a lot of overtime, and that over 40% of our budget goes to public safety. Im all for those services, but I wonder if the city has ever thought about a combined service that does both?
I know that other cities do this. Could our police and fire dept be absorbed into Grand Traverse County? Just a thought.

I see that alot of spending will be on fixing the roads and such things as employee payroll increases but it would be nice to see a small portion contributed to charity such as the homeless shelter here in Grand Traverse.
If at all possible it would be nice but I know keeping up on our county maintence in general is a nessesity first and foremost.
